A spouse question

Sunday, May 4th, 2008Working a non transcription job full time and trying to complete any thorough Medical Transcription Advanced Training can be very trying. This is another reason why Med Workshops created Mentored Internship and Job Placement. AND it only takes about 9 months to finish Bright Start and Mentored Internship if you study at a normal pace. Other classes run 15 months to 2 years or more.
So, what is a good procedure to follow if you work full time? Here is one. Other students please add your comments too.
Unfortunately there is no one magical trick or tip that I can offer that will get you through it faster. What you want to do is pace yourself and stay on a steady schedule.
The best advice I ever give students is to think of it the same way you would a diet. If you look at all the pounds you want to lose, it is often hard to accomplish. If you look at all the study you have to complete, it will seem hard and never ending. Break it all down into little chunks.
Example: take the total number of reports that you have left to type and divide that into the number of days you want to complete all of them in. Be reasonable with your goal. Divide the number of reports by the number of days to figure out how many reports you would have to complete each day to make your deadline. If you are forced to miss a day of typing due to your work schedule, then be sure that you “make up” that day of typing on another day (say like a Saturday or Sunday) so that you stay on track.
Let’s say that you start out with 5 reports for each day. The first thing you want to do is type completely through all 5 reports without stopping – we can all get the English, and you will have lots of blanks, but completing the “core” of the report helps to increase your typing speed.
Next, go back, listen to the voice file again while you are looking at the typed report and see if you can now hear words, sentences or other things that you left blank. Often you can fill in many blanks, but when you do your research, you may find that all the reports have the same blanks. Therefore, you are only researching one time instead of 5 separate times. When you have done all that you can possibly do.
The final step is what I call “reverse learning.” When you see the corrected copy, listen to the voice file once again while you are looking at the words that you may have missed. You will be so amazed at how you can now often “hear” the words (eye-ear contact) as you are looking at them and you are able to learn from that.
As you get faster at typing the 5 reports, move yourself up to 6 or 7 reports so that you increase your speed. Continue to do that always keeping in mind that you get paid for the amount you type not for the time you spend on research. Your goal will always be to type as much as you can so that when you actually start working you can make a decent living!
Let me know if this information helps! I am waving my pom poms for you! Hurry and finish so we can put you to work!
